my new toy

On the topic of photography on January 25th

I am a recent, proud owner of the Nikon D5000. Not only did I catch a great price, but this camera turned out to be a real beauty as it produces great quality photographs. I am no professional photographer (and not looking to be one), so this DSLR works out great for my needs and purposes. I was looking into the D90, but a friend much more into photography than I am, Kris Szupa, said the D5000 was well worth it for my needs — and I couldn’t agree more. Kris even owns the D90 and was impressed with how well the D5000 worked and photographed. I’m also investing the extra money the D90 would have cost me into a 18–200mm lens.

Of course since opening the DSLR I’ve decided to show off my photography “skills” (or lack thereof) by starting a new Flickr account for just my photographs (for my design inspiration Flickr account visit here). I’ll be posting random photos of everyday occurrences, so viewer beware. You never know what you might get!

Also since I’m nerdy and love tea I’ve decided to do a little twist on the normal Project 365 by photographing tea I drink everyday for the next year. I’m already 23 days behind when I started so I’ll try my best to make up for it and add some extra photographs along the way.

Oh yeah — I also purchased one of those nifty Gorillapods. Still waiting for it to arrive.

Wow – I’ve always wanted one of those!

Tea? That’s a good idea. Do you drink different kinds of teas?

Pretty sweet Brian! I’m hoping to pick up a Nikon this year, will consider the D5000. Looking forward to your photos.

Allen,
Yes, I love my tea all through the day. I currently have over 20 various loose teas all sealed up and ready to be drank!

Nice choice. I have a Nikon D80 that I purchased right after it came out. It was pricey, but well worth the cash. Although, like most things tech, a couple years have passed and I’m already looking at new ones.

I really like that the D90 supports movie capture, but after having a larger bodied camera… I really would like something lighter and smaller because I often find myself without a camera simply because I dont feel like lugging it around. I just dont want to sacrifice the image quality.

Im always worried that I will buy something and then a couple months down the road something better will come out .

Neat, you have the same camera and lens as I have.
Very happy with both so far, you’ll like it!

What a great concept! I love tea and photography!

I have my green tea at my desk right now. I also recently purchased a Canon Rebel. I was torn between Nikon or Canon. I heard the bodies are very similar and that lens make the biggest difference.

Did you take any classes?
I love photography, but there is so much to learn!

I look forward to the tea photos! I would love to read about your recommendations/favorites.

Very cool gadget you got there. I looked at your flickr account and the pictures are indeed drool-worthy (nice tea kettle in ‘Short n’ Stout’ BTW, I used to own one just like it).

A camera like this looks like it’s worth the few months of saving alright :)

Katherine,
Happy to hear you share in my passion of tea. I hope to do a follow up one day of all the various 25+ loose teas I currently have. As far as the Canon and Nikon debate, I heard is give and take. People that own Canons swear by them, as do Nikon owners. In my opinion, both produce amazing results.

I took a few photography classes in college, so I have a solid understanding of photography and cameras, but I am no pro — but you never know! ;)

I’m so jealous! I’ve always wanted a good DSLR, but it’s just not been in the budget so far. I hope you enjoy it!

Congrats on the new camera! The 18-200 is a great lens that you’re going to love. Don’t get into photography too much though. It’s expen$ive!
