Choosing a typeface timelapse
15 CommentsOn the topic of typography on November 22nd
In the midst of designing a logo for one of my clients AQL Consulting, I decided to screen record my process and involvement of choosing the best typeface for the particular mark I created for AQL.
The original 45 minute video was sped up by 800% and condensed down to a two and a half minute time lapse. All editing was done in iMovie 09 (I’m no where near a professional video editor, but I did have fun while putting this together) with the song Shared Light by Abakus added as background/tempo music.

Feel free to view the finalized AQL Consulting logo on my portfolio.

Thanks for the video. What did you use to capture it?

Misha,
It was captured using Quicktime on Snow Leopard. First time using QT to capture and worked well.

Awesome! Glad to see how another designer experiments with fonts. (Pretty similar, really!)

Now I kind of want to do that all the time. Like, I’m probably going to start screen recording every sustained bout of work that I do. It looks so nice when it’s all getting done so fast.

I have to ask, what program are you using to preview and select the typefaces?

I use Suitcase Fusion 2. I highly recommend it, especially because it turns on and off fonts when they are in and not in use. Helps your programs to load faster and your overall system performance.

That’s fantastic! I was using Adobe Type Manager but, as you may know, they discontinued it several years ago. What can I say, creature of habit. Not a good thing for a designer. But ATM didn’t have nearly the functionality of Suitcase Fusion 2. Sold. :P

I have a couple of questions for you. 1) What software are you using to go through all your fonts? 2) How many fonts do you have installed and does that software only go through those installed or also those not installed?

Mathew,
I use Suitcase Fusion 2 for managing my font library and all the fonts are turned off. When wanting to use a font for a particular project you can turn the font on as ‘temporary.’ What this does it turns the font off automatically when you close out of the project and turns it back on when you open up the project. Definitely recommend using Suitcase Fusion 2.

I dig Brian! I love how time lapse works & I think that its really good for clients, new designers and old designers to see that this kind of thing takes time….. Cheers for the video.
